A firefighter walks past the wreckage of a 70-ton construction crane that fell onto a house at 1212 Oakwood Avenue on Thursday October 21, 2010. Crews contracted through Denton's Tree Service were using the 140 foot boom to remove a large tree on the side of the home when the crane tipped over and fell onto the house.

EMS personnel take a worker from Denton's Tree Service to an ambulance after the crane collapsed. The worker was reportedly a tree climber working to cut sections of a large tree that were being removed by the crane, and when the crane began to collapse in his direction he jumped or slid down the tree sustaining non life threatening injuries.

Police surround a residence on 11th Avenue in Gastonia where a suspect that is believed to be armed has engaged police in a protracted standoff on Tuesday May 5, 2009. The woman, who has a history of mental illness and was believed to be armed with a rifle, refused to leave her home after authorities attempted to serve her with involuntary commitment papers.


Police negotiators, below, who were assisted by mental health professionals, speak with the suspect over a loudspeaker as they attempt to talk her out. Police responded with SWAT teams and snipers, second from bottom, and evacuated nearby residents from their homes for safety reasons during the standoff that lasted some six hours.

Police investigate the scene of a single vehicle crash on Old Willis School road in Gaston County on Tuesday March 31, 2009. One individual was transported by helicopter to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte while two other occupants were taken to Gaston Memorial Hospital with less severe injuries. A forth occupant was not seriously injured.
